Reason Eleventy-Billion Why I Think My Hubs Is the Best

I adore my husband for many countless reasons, most of which revolve around the fact that he's not only my hubs but my very best friend in the world who totally and completely gets me.

Below is a direct quote from The Hubs to me sent just a few minutes ago via email:

"Did you know that Glenn Beck plans to create a tv show that's going to be an "anti-Glee"?  He says "it's horrifying some of the things that they're teaching high schoolers."  Then he says, "but it's brilliantly done. It's produced, brilliantly. Its music, brilliant. Its acting, brilliant. Its cinematography, brilliant. All of it!"

I wonder if he's ever actually watched the show...

In response I've decided to start my own anti-Glee.   It will still deal with all the issues in Glee and have all the gayness Beck fears, but will be devoid of plot holes, actually have a driven story, have far less over production on the music, get rid of any mid-western white guy rapping, and do away with the cumbersome theme episodes that cram seven songs into an episode for the sake of itunes sales."

Why do I love this?
Well, it's hilarious, but also, for someone who claims to dislike Glee so much, he certainly does know a lot about it... I'm guessing someone's paying far more attention than they let on on Tuesday nights.
(Side note: Oh, Glee.  You big steaming pile of hot mess.  I wish I knew how to quit you.)

Day 15 – Favorite male character

Of course, I have more than one (HELLO, don't you know me??)  However, like with the authors, I'll only write a little extra about one.  So, first: I mentioned Michael Moscovitz yesterday, and he's definitely one of them, because he's a real boy written like a real boy.  And he'll show you his Blueside.  My second one is the incomparable Boy With The Bread, Peeta Mellark.  Oh, my #PeetaPocket.
I'm not going to say anything about that except... I love tumblr.  (All credit to that goes to lilliansblog.)

Okay, for real now, here's my pick and why.

Cricket Bell from Lola & The Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins
*as imagined by Simini Blocker

I've never been one of those girls that goes for the bad boys (I did once, not quite realizing that he was one, and let's just say it didn't end well).  I never really wanted to date the boy you needed to change or fix.  Frankly, I'm awesome, and I should be treated awesome.  When I am treated awesome, I respond by treating you awesome in return.  Win-win, as they say.

HOWever, I've found that I'm the complete exception to this rule, and it was especially evident when I was a teenager.  While other girls at my school were going after jerky dudes who didn't even know they existed, I was always the one chasing after the musicians, the theater geeks, the smart guys... essentially, the nerdy guys.  And Cricket Bell is just about as nerdy as they come.  He is the epitome of all the things I love best about nerdy guys.  He's sweet and charming, he cares about people and isn't afraid to show it, he's awkward and tall and has crazy hair and... I just love him.

Cricket is sort of an anomaly in modern YA, where he's presented from the beginning as already in like with the main character, rather than assuming they don't like each other and will have tons of ridiculous conflict together over and over until finally he says, "Oh wait, this girl is kinda amazing, I should stop being mean to her."  And then the girl says, "Well, I know you've been mean to me for a long time, but I know it was really because you lurved me!"  (Yes, this is a GINORMOUS generalization, but whatever.)  Cricket's just like, "Yep.  Like you!  Let's go out!"  And when he finds out Lola has a boyfriend who's kind of a dillhole, he says that while he desperately wants to be with her, he'd rather she BE HAPPY and he will LET HER GO if the dillhole is really what she wants.  But he's also willing to fight for her, to wait for her to realize that he's the much, much, MUCH better choice.  He stands up for her, understands her, sees that she's not perfect in the larger sense of the word but that she just might be perfect for him.  Some argue that being sensitive isn't manly, but I disagree.  I know I always be saying this but to me, there's nothing more bad-ass than being yourself.  You don't have to punch some guy to prove that you're strong.

So when Cricket leaps back into the scene just in the nick of time, I'm basically just a big ball of swoony swoons until the very last page.

That's why I love this boy, because he understands what true love is.  It's wanting the one you love to be happy, regardless of your own happiness.  And that's why the sensitive/nerdy guys of the world- the Cricket Bells, the Peeta Mellarks, the Michael Moscovitzs, the The Hubs Jacks- will always have my heart.  I don't want to chase.  I want to be truly loved.  Thankfully, I am.

Why I Will Forever Think Of John Stamos On This Day

Three years ago on this very day, I had the official best day of my life thus far- I married my best friend!  Best decision ever.  Even when I'm bummed out about other things, I love my life with The Hubs, and I am still amazed at how our love continues to grow, even after these many, many years together.  Somehow, I never tire of him, and it's totally awesome.  Yay us!

I've been thinking a lot about the wedding and the days before it for a few days now.  The ceremony and reception took place at the same venue, a b-e-a-uuutiful resort in Williamsburg called Kingsmill (which, btw, is ah-MAZE-ing in every way).  My parents, my bridesmaids, and I all went down 2 nights before to relax and hang out at the spa before the big event.  While we were all together, we were talking about (what else) TV shows and our favorite wedding episodes from over the years.  Since my ladies and I are children of the 90's, every one of us mentioned the wedding of Jesse Katsopolis and Rebecca Donaldson on Full House, especially the fact that Uncle Jesse sang Aunt Becky an awesomely cheesy song called "Forever" (which is really a Beach Boys song).  Amazingly, we could all sing at least one line of it, despite the fact that none of us had seen it in yeeeears.  We even laughed about the even cheesier video that he made in later episodes once he got signed to Fat Fish Records (holy crap, why didn't my parents make me play outside more??).

So, on January 19, 2008, I woke up in a cushy bed in a gorgeous hotel room with my best girl friends in the world, and we turned on the TV to see what the weather was going to be that day (spoiler alert: IT SNOWED!!), and, lo and behold, Full House was on.  Not just any episode, however.  It was amazingly the episode where Uncle Jesse's video debuts.  We all cracked up so bad, and I took it as one of many signs that it was going to be a great day.

And it was.

Enjoy the cheese, just like we did three wonderful years ago!  Love you, Hubs.  Forever.

Acceptance is the first step.

As I sit here, anxiously checking the tracking on my order from Amazon that I have been waiting on for what feels like a GAZILLION YEARS, a certain thought comes to me.  Something I've been trying to deny for a long time, but I feel that I can't anymore.

I've become a bigger geek than my husband.

See, it all started almost exactly 10 years ago, when I met a redheaded tuba player wearing a Ben Folds Five shirt, and I thought, "THAT BOY will be my friend."  I didn't TELL that boy that he would be my friend; I just assumed he knew.  Either way, those mind beams worked, and he became my best male confidant and my favorite concert buddy.  I found out that he had a lifelong attachment to Peanuts comics, a sincere love for almost all things Batman (except don't ask him about Joel Schmacher...), and a constant need to ALWAYS leave the TV on either Discovery or History Channel.  He was in a comedy troupe in college that actually ended up getting kinda famous for some REALLY HILARIOUS stuff (not that I have any reason to promote that or anything), and he loves playing some video games, especially ones like Halo or Batman or FIFA Soccer.  He actually watches and enjoys soccer.

Me, I've always know that I'm a nerd.  It's not something I really try to hide.  I mean, I met my nerdy husband in college marching band, for Sousa's sake.  However, I've always taken a little comfort in the fact that, though I love him dearly and he is truly my very best friend in the world, my husband is nerdier than me.

Except, I'm the one who loves Harry Potter.  Which led me to Twilight.  And then cue Buffy.  Which led to Angel.  Which led to Buffy Season 8.  Which led to Firefly.  Which led to Serenity.  Which led to me wanting to get the Firefly comics, but he says no.  Which led to reading more YA books, involving plots of the paranormal or fantasy or sci-fi persuasion (though, there were some other connections to this that I didn't mention).  Then, I notice that I'm the one making him look at Comic-Con pictures, telling him what cosplay and steampunk mean.

Finally, what has pretty much decided that I have lost my long battle against Dorkiest Person In The House, I became the initiator for us seeing Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (he didn't mind if we saw it, but he preferred Inception).  Of course, I freakin' loved like every dang second of it.  So I went out and got the soundtrack.  And beg my friend to go with me to see it a second time.  After she stopped hysterically laughing, of course, I go onto Amazon and order the entire Scott Pilgrim graphic novel set.  Which is what I've been tracking.  (And, to those who have seen the movie, I understand the irony.  Or coincidence.  Whatever, I get it.)

My name is Jessica, and I'm a huge, huge geek.

Rainy Day Grateful List

This weekend, I had a lot of conversations about how this year and last year and the one before were all filled with pretty crappy things.  Granted, 2008 had its share of horribleness, but I also got married and went to Italy, so sometimes it's hard to complain about that.  Either way, I'd like to concentrate on the good things in my life at present and the things that make me happy.  So, without further ado, here are a few of my favorite things today.

*Sugar Bush Maple coffee- it smells and tastes like pancakes
*Glee Volume Three on sale today with NEIL PATRICK HARRIS
*The episode of Glee tonight with NEIL PATRICK HARRIS
*The possibility of hanging out with awesome friends this weekend to celebrate a 30th birthday (though I'll have to go back to Richmond to do it...)
*Wearing the pashmina I bought in Italy, which makes me think about Italy
*Beautiful Creatures, the new book I'm reading, where the teenage male narrator is kinda girly but I don't really care
*my Sketchers Shape-Ups, which may LOOK like Frankenstein shoes, but they are really REALLY comfortable, so I don't mind much, and plus I already gots a man so I'm not trying to impress you
*My hubs, who is sweet and cute and loves me and is pretty much just awesome all around
*Lost will be over soon, and while that doesn't make me happy, it means my questions will soon be answered, and THAT'S what I'm looking for
*my dog, because she's just so dang cute, and I'm so glad we saved her from a sad fate

These are all kind of surface-y things right now, but I don't want to delve too deep on the internet.  Either way, read it and like it.

I guess he IS listening...

Time: this morning
Place: living room
Players: Starring me as me and Jack as The Hubs

AND action!

Me: I'm surprised you haven't said anything about what I'm wearing.
Hubs: Why?
Me: Because this is a different style of shirt that I usually wear [side note: I tried to link to a picture of the shirt, but it's apparently NOT at OldNavy.com, even though I got the shirt SATURDAY.  EDIT: it's here.]
Hubs: That's true.  It looks very good on you.  You look very grown-up today...
Me: Thank you!
Hubs: ...And because you look grown-up today, it means you're going to feel uncomfortable all day because you feel like you're playing dress-up.
Me: [silence as I ponder how well The Hubs knows me]
Hubs: Love you!  Have a good day!
