Day 06 – Favorite episode of your favorite show

[Warning: this might be a bit of a downer]

Yesterday, I talked about watching sad videos in preparation for this entry.  Why would I watch sad videos to prepare to talk about my favorite episode of my favorite show?  Whedonites know why.

Because my favorite episode of Buffy is the best episode of Buffy which is also the saddest episode of Buffy.  It's called "The Body," but if it were an episode of Friends, its title would be "The One Where Joyce Summers Dies."

I've already talked about this episode here, so I won't repeat that.  What I wanted to do is post a video of Anya giving her monologue, which is amazing.  I wanted to say it's the best part of the episode, but I really don't think there's one "part" that's any better than the other.  The whole thing is exquisite to watch; it's television at its finest.  Sadly, I can't find any videos of it.  Below is a transcript.  I think of Anya's speech often.  It's exactly how I've felt on too many occasions.

"But I don't understand. I don't understand how this all happens. How we go through this. I mean, I knew her, and then she's- There's just a body, and I don't understand why she just can't get back in it and not be dead anymore. It's stupid. It's mortal and stupid. And-and Xander's crying and not talking, and-and I was having fruit punch, and I thought, well, Joyce will never have any more fruit punch ever, and she'll never have eggs, or yawn or brush her hair, not ever, and no one will explain to me why."

Day 05 – A show you hate

So, I thought today's choice was my favorite episode of my favorite show, so I spent way too much time looking at sad videos and gifs and things, only to find out that it's a show I hate.  That's something, huh?

There is only one show I've ever actively avoided ever, and that's Two and a Half Men.  I don't even want to actually talk about it.  I just CANNOT ABIDE by it.  No. NO.  It's terrible.  And unfunny.  I have never seen anything on it that I actually thought was funny, and I don't understand why so many people like it.

That's... really it.  You were ready for a big ole rant, weren't you?

Instead, here are some videos of things that I like.

Day 04- Your Favorite Show Ever

(I swear I had this all written yesterday like it should have been, but my evening was weird so I forgot to post but HERE IT IS OMG LOOK)

This... well, this is a tough one.  I have tons of favorite shows ever, and it all depends on what mood I'm in.  I've answered this question before with Gilmore Girls, Friends, Scrubs, and Six Feet Under, and those answers have all been right at one time or another.  However, if I'm considering my TV watching "career" as a whole, if I really look back at the show that's affected me most, that grabbed onto my heart and brain and eyeballs and didn't let go, that was there when I needed it... there's only one show that fits that description.

I didn't watch Buffy when it first aired, and while I regret that decision, I don't think this show would've meant as much to me as it does now.  I watched the first season on a whim, and I totally loved it.  I'd been wanting to ask for other seasons of the show for my birthday... and the day before said birthday, my grandfather passed away.  Hubs had already gotten me the first 2 seasons as presents, so whenever I needed to separate myself from the family and distract myself from the grief, we hid away and watched Buffy kick some ass.  In the weeks that followed, I basically devoured the show, hiding away in my bedroom and watching episode after episode after episode.

So, this sounds totally unhealthy, and I agree it probably wasn't the best way to spend my time.  However, at that time in my life, it was exactly what I needed.  Joss Whedon, you are a genius and I am so grateful for you.  Thank you for this show, and for all the shows that have followed.  Also the movies.  And the comics.  Dang, I am such a Whedonite.

Day 03 – Your favorite new show (aired this TV season)

Short and sweet today, guys.  Not much to say on this topic, unfortunately.

I haven't picked up any new shows this TV season, which is rare.  Right now, I'm more in a catch-up-on-old-stuff phase rather than a pick-up-new-stuff phase.  Also, I'm getting more webseries like The Lizzie Bennet Diaries and Squaresville.

However, the only show I keep up with with that was new this season is The Mindy Project.
this picture is kind of terrible.
I don't think it always works, but it was a good way for me to spend the half hour between New Girl and Parenthood.  I thought the pilot was downright hilarious.  Plus, Chris Messina.

Day 02 – A Show That You Wish More People Were Watching

I like to believe that I have pretty standard taste in TV shows, but it's constantly proven to me that I don't.  This is especially true when it comes to sitcoms.  While I can find comfort in a show that uses the same tropes since Ozzie and Harriet graced the screen, I usually find that sort of thing to be boring and unfunny.  Show me something new, TV show.  Don't go for the obvious joke.  Earn my laughter.

There's been one show over the past few years that has done all of these things and more, and it always on the verge of falling into the nothingness.  That's why my show that I wish more people were watching IS:

Community.

I will admit that something's been a little off since it returned in February (which, incidentally, was also October 19th), but those first three seasons... well, that was a sitcom like they had never been done before.  It poked and pointed at the genre to find what makes it tick, and then it made fun of it.  The kicker for me is that it airs against The Big Bang Theory, which always kills in ratings and which I don't find to be funny in the least.  I've watched multiple episodes, and I just don't enjoy it.  They go for the easy joke while Community goes for "Remedial Chaos Theory."

If you haven't already, watch some Community.  At least watch "Remedial Chaos Theory."  If you don't laugh during the timeline when Troy gets the pizza... well, I don't know if we're allowed to be friends.

30 Day TV Challenge Day 01

March sure did sneak up on me.  For the past 2 Marches, I have done 30 Day Blog Challenges, and I didn't want to drop the ball!  So, even though I've been the worst blogger ever lately and even though I'm not sure if anyone even checks these out anymore (um... do you?), I've decided, MARCH MEANS CHALLENGES.  I've done music, I've done books.  What other form of media do I adore and talk about a LOT?  Um... oh that's right: TELEVISION.

Without further ado, I bring you:

Day 01: A show that should have never been canceled

This has always been a problematic phrase in my opinion, because what "should" and "shouldn't" be canceled are two very objective things.  I don't think lots of shows should have been canceled, but with hindsight, I'm glad that they were so those actors could go onto better things or that show can be remembered as being something greater due to its limited selection of episodes (the latter is why Firefly isn't my choice right now).  I decided to go with one show (and one honorable mention) that didn't get the chance it deserved by the people running the network.  They didn't listen to the critics, they didn't listen to the audience, they ignored the multitude of awards, and they unceremoniously tossed it into the TV Graveyard.  At least it was only mostly dead.

Of course, I'm talking about Arrested Development.  Maybe the show would've lost some of its fire a few more seasons down the line.  Maybe we wouldn't have loved it with the great nerdy fervor that we do.  However, I don't believe Fox understood the show nor did they give it the opportunity it truly deserved.  They prematurely shot their wad on what was supposed to be a dry run if you will, so I'm afraid they had somewhat of a mess on their hands.

Thank goodness for Netflix who will come in and help change many of those poorly chosen words.

Honorable Mention
from thesearemyfavorites.tumblr.com
Just trust me on this.  Do you love Adam Scott?  And Lizzy Caplan?  And Ken Marino?  And Jane Lynch?  I know you do.  You also SHOULD love Martin Starr and Ryan Hansen.  You should've watched this show when you had the chance... except Starz didn't tell anyone it was on.  Stupid Starz. I'm positive all of these actors have moved on to bigger and better things, but you should really see them all together, hating everything, serving hors d'oeuvres in their pink bowties.
